Thinking for a Change: A New, Highly Effective, Cognitive Behavior Change Program From the National Institute of Corrections

RMOMS Treatment Services now offers Thinking for a Change as one option in a continuum of interventions to address the cognitive, social and emotional need of offender populations. Thinking for a Change (T4C) is an integrated, cognitive behavior change program comprised of three sections;
  • Cognitive Self Change,
  • Social Change,
  • Problem Solving Skills.

The curriculum was developed by Barry Glick, Ph.D., Jack Bush, Ph.D., and Juliana Taymans, Ph.D., in cooperation with the National Institute of Corrections in an effort to synthesize the concepts and tools from both cognitive restructuring and cognitive skills paradigms, into one completely integrated, seamless intervention.

Studies substantiate that clients successfully completing the Thinking for a Change curriculum resulted in a 33% reduction in new offense charges compared to untreated groups. Additionally, those who did not recidivate demonstrated better interpersonal and problem-solving skills than those who did re-offend.

At the core of this curriculum is an integrated combination of cognitive restructuring and cognitive skills interventions. Lesson topics include: active listening; asking a question; giving feedback; our thinking controls how we act; paying attention to our thinking; recognizing the thinking that leads to trouble; finding new thinking; using thinking check ins; knowing your feelings; understanding and responding to the feelings of others; preparing for a stressful conversation; responding to anger; dealing with an accusation; five steps of problem solving; and a self-evaluation of areas for further skill development.

T4C is designed for delivery to small groups in 25 lessons and can be expanded on to meet the needs of specific participant group. Groups are offered through RMOMS Thinking for a Change certified facilitators.
